Candy Isn’t the Answer: Packing Fun School Lunches for Your Child

Everyone knows how important it is for students to eat a good breakfast to be fueled and ready for their day. What few focus on is the equal importance of students consuming balanced lunches. Midway through a grueling day of tests and assignments, students need a boost, both in terms of their spirits and their palates. Consider the following suggestions for brightening up your child’s school day while providing him with the nutrients he needs to succeed.

  1. The medium is the message. The packaging of your child’s lunch can be just as important as what’s inside. Invest in a lunch box that will make him smile. Let your child make the decision, and don’t worry about splurging a little. A durable lunchbox that fits your child’s personality is well worth it.
  2. Variety is key. Balance each meal, but don’t offer the same thing every time. If you pack an apple every day, your child might begin to throw them away out of apple fatigue. It’s neither healthy nor fun to be forced into eating the same meal daily, so mix it up. Pack pineapple chunks and a roast beef sandwich instead of the mainstay of turkey and an apple.
  3. Indulging is OK now and then. If your child really loves pizza, it’s not going to kill him to pack a pizza slice in his lunch now and then. Pizza isn’t the healthiest lunch option, but he’ll appreciate knowing it’s not completely off limits.
  4. Snazzy snacks are perfect. Instead of chips or a cookie, make fun and healthy snacks like ants on a log (celery, peanut butter and raisins) or a fruity pudding concoction. Your child won’t be disappointed with healthy foods if they’re also entertaining.
