Study of the Environment in Elementary Science Education

During the early Elementary school years, it can at times be hard for teachers to figure out what the children should be learning for science. It is not as cut and dried as other subjects are for young children. One subject that can spark many lessons, and in fact has a place in most all early science curriculum is a study of the environment.

Kids have a natural fascination with nature and the environment. The first lessons can focus on how a child fits in with the world around them. There are many ways to break this down further with a study of plants, trees, animals and the weather in the area the child is growing up in. Children will love this type of study because it is something that they can apply to their everyday lives and practice while they are home.

After the children understand their own environment, it is time to teach them what they can do to protect it and make it a better place. Most teachers find that their students enjoy helping take care of the planet and want to implement many of the things they learn at school about saving the planet with their family. A teacher can make a big difference in the future of our planet by sharing tips for being environmentally aware with their children.

The lessons learned at this early age will help the students, not just in making a difference in the world, but also in their future studies in science. All science boils down to the study of our world and life in general. The earliest lessons I was taught in the subject of science are the ones that have stuck with me through the years and that I will be handing down to my children when the time is right.
